This workshop provides practical possibilities to create a classroom community which honours and supports all students - or to nurture your existing classroom community.
How to Be Their Calm in Stormy Seas: Strategies to Support Dysregulated Students
"HOW TO BE THEIR CALM IN STORMY SEAS: Strategies to Support Dysregulated Students"
Even caring classroom communities can experience challenging situations. This workshop presents an evidence-based approach that will help you understand how to “keep your cool” so you can help your students proactively and in-the-moment by:
-planning for overload (theirs and yours),
-understanding the Dysregulation Cycle, including:
-the physiology of strong emotions,
-effective strategies for the different stages as a crisis develops,
-thinking about your own triggers and stress reactions ahead of time,
-reframing the situation
-creating a personal regulation routine to anchor yourself and determine the next step,
-implementing strategies following a crisis (self-care, supporting debriefs, possible consequences, and facilitating reconnection with other students and staff)
-taking care of yourself so that you can focus on your students and hold a safe space for them, and
-creating an empathetic culture of collegial support.
